History

Zr.Ms. Zeeleeuw (S803) is one of four Dutch Walrus-class submarines. Built in Rotterdam, Zeeleeuw was the first of the class to enter service, commissioning 25 April, 1990. A diesel electric sub, she displaces 2,650 tons submerged, and has a top speed of 20 knots, but only 11 on the surface. Zeeleeuw spends most of her time participating in naval exercises and intelligence gathering. She took part in anti-piracy operation off Africa in 2010, and entered a major refit in 2014. The refit lasted into 2016, and saw an almost complete replacement of the subs sensor and operations systems, and the upgrading of the torpedoes to a new version. Zeeleeuw has been back on active duty since.
