History

Zr.Ms. Groningen (P843) is a Holland-class offshore patrol vessel, commissioned 29 November, 2013. Groningen got an early start in her duties, helping to search for survivors from MV Baltic Ace in 2012 while she was still undergoing sea trials. 2014 saw Groningen deployed to the Caribbean for counter-narcotics work, and in December, she "escorted" a pair of Russian ships sailing along the Dutch coast. In late 2015, she participated in anti-piracy operations off Somalia, and returned to the Caribbean the following year. Groningen visited Ipswitch, England, in January, 2019, before heading to the Caribbean again. While there in July of 2020, her NH90 helicopter crashed, killing two crew, prompting the grounding of all Dutch NH90s pending an investigation.
