History

USS Stephen W. Groves (FFG-29) is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate. Laid down 16 September, 1980, she commissioned 17 April, 1982. In 1983, during her maiden deployment, she was dispatched to support the New Jersey battlegroup after the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut. Groves hosted the Big J's helicopters while the battleship lobbed shells from all three turrets. She also got in a little action of her own, providing direct fire support for the Marines from Beirut harbor. Groves would later escort her sister USS Stark back home, after the latter was hit by Iraqi missiles in 1987. Her last major action came on 10 May, 2011, when she engaged the a Somali pirate vessel in a gun duel in the Indian Ocean, sinking the ship. Groves decommissioned 24 February, 2012, and was sold for scrap in 2020.
