The protected cruiser USS Atlanta was laid down in November, 1883, in Chester, Pennsylvania, but had to be completed at the New York Navy Yard after her builders went bankrupt. Commissioning on 19 July, 1886, and served in the North Atlantic and Evolution Squadrons until September, 1895, when she was decommissioned. Atlanta hung about the New York Navy Yard until she was recommissioned in 1900, and served in the South Atlantic and Caribbean Squadrons until 1905, when she was converted into a barracks ship. She served in this role until decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1912.
