History

This is the PNS Zulfiquar (F251), a F-22P type frigate built for the Pakistani Navy in a joint project by Pakistan and China. The Zulfiquar-class are based on the Chinese Type 053H3, and carry an array of guns and missiles. The mount just ahead of the bridge is a launcher for FM-90 surface-to-air missiles. The top of the 76mm turret is just visible ahead of them. Built in China, Zulfiquar was launched in 2008, and commissioned the following year. She has been deployed in support of anti-piracy operations off Somalia, and to monitor ongoing operations off Afghanistan as part of the War of Terror. In September, 2014, she was attacked by a detachment of Al Qaeda, which tried to capture the ship, but the Pakistanis prevented the takeover.
