JS Hatakaze (DDG-171) is the lead of a two-ship class, commissioned 27 March, 1986. Her arsenal includes Harpoon and SM-1MR Standard missiles, anti-submarine rockets, torpedoes, Phalanx CIWS, and two 5" (127mm) guns. Hatakaze has two different sets of gas turbines, one for cruising, and the other for high-speed maneuvers. She participated in the RIMPAC 1994 international fleet exercise, and visited the US that summer. Still in commission, she was converted to a training ship in 2020, and conducted joint exercises with the US Navy off Guam in February, 2021. Her home port is Yokosuka.
