History

Laid down 12 February, 1986, the Cassard-class frigate Jean Bart (D615) commissioned 21 September, 1991. Her primary armament is the Exocet anti-shipping missile, but she also carries a 100mm/55 dual-purpose gun, the Standard surface-to-air missile, two tubes for the L5 mod 4 torpedo, two 20mm and four 12.7mm machine guns, and the Mistral point-defense missile. Jean Bart can also embark a Panther anti-submarine helicopter. In 2008, Jean Bart participated in anti-piracy operations off Somalia, assisting in the liberation of the yacht MY Le Ponant. Six years later, she was deployed against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and captured a dhow in the Mediterranean in 2019 that was smuggling narcotics.
