History

INS Eilat (501) is the lead ship of the Sa'ar 5-class corvettes. Built for the Israeli Navy by Northrop Grumman, Eilat commissioned 21 May, 1994. She is armed with two triple torpedo tubes, eight Harpoon anti-shipping missiles, Barak surface-to-air missiles, and ships a Eurocopter Panther helicopter. Her top speed is 33 knots. While rated as a corvette, due to her small hull and crew of just seventy-one, Eilat and her sisters are comparable to some frigates in firepower. In August, 2009, Eilat deployed to the Red Sea with her sister Hanit, and a Dolphin-class submarine.
