Ship Type
Laid Down

Laid down in 1977, HR.Ms. Philips van Almonde (F823) was a Kortenaer-class frigate of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Commissioned 2 December, 1981, she saw service with NATO maritime forces in the Atlantic, and coalition forces during the Gulf War. Her last action under Dutch colors was in 2001, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Decommissioned in 2002, van Almonde was sold to Greece, and recommissioned as Θεμιστοκλής (Themistoklis), joining other former Dutch Kortenaer's and two originally built for Greece as the Elli-class. She has a top speed of 30 knots, mounts a 76mm gun forward, and carries Harpoon and Sea Sparrow missiles. Her air detachment includes up to two Sea Lynx helicopters. Themistoklis did not undergo the mid-life modernization program that the bulk of the Elli-class received in 2004-09, but remains in service.
