History

One of the Hydra-class frigates, Psara (F-454) launched for the Greek Navy in 1994. One of the home-built units, Psara was based off a German design, the MEKO 200 type, modified to suit Greek requirements. Financial problems delayed completion, resulting in commissioning in 1998. Despite having a relatively short cruise range of 4,100 nautical miles, Psara has seen considerable overseas deployment, including off Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Somalia. She was the flagship of the anti-piracy operations off Somalia in 2009, and led the capture of at least one group of pirates. Psara received a new fire control system in 2008, and a mid-life upgrade was planned for 2018, but Greek financial difficulties delayed the program, with expected completion for the class now 2024.
