History

HMNZS Otago (P148) is a Protector-class offshore patrol vessel. Commissioned in 2010, she was nearly two years behind schedule, due to build issues. Before delivery, Otago was found to be both overweight and not up to contract specifications, but she was finally accepted into the New Zealand Navy in February, 2010. The next month, both of Otago's engines developed problems while on trials, requiring a return to the builders. She was further plagued by trouble with sea water contaminating her fuel, and the engines needing further repairs within a year. Her teething problems seem to have been sorted out after that, and Otago has spent most of her time since September, 2012, patrolling the Antarctic and local fisheries. Otago has received a few minor upgrades to her weapons and navigation systems, and now operates SH-2G Super Seasprite helicopters. She spent time working with US Coast Guard Cutters in August, 2019, visiting ports in American Samoa.
