History

FNS Turunmaa (03) a Finnish fast gunboat. Internationally classified as a corvette, she was designed to operate in the anti-submarine and trade protection roles. Turunmaa commissioned in 1969, along with her sister Karjala. At the time of her commissioning, Turunmaa had advanced electronics and propulsion equipment, which made the international community take note. The power plant included both diesel and gas engines, giving her a cruise range of 5,000 nautical miles, and a top speed of 37 knots. She underwent refit in 1985-6, and continued to serve until 2002, when both were decommissioned. Turunmaa was stripped of her armaments and used by Satakunta Polytechnics for training and as a machine shop. She was last known to be undergoing refit for civilian use, but pictures from 2008 show her to be in a very poor state of upkeep.
