History

Purchased from Germany by Norway in 1913, while under construction, the submarine A-4 was delivered in early 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I. Displacing 342 tons, A-4 was 153 feet long, and could make 9 knots while submerged: pretty good for the time. With a crew of only sixteen, she carried three 18" torpedo tubes, and a 76mm gun. A-4 guarded Norway until the German invasion of 1940, when she was scuttled by her crew on 16 April, to prevent capture by the Germans.
