USS Blackfin (SS-322)
Laid down in 1943, the Balao-class submarine USS Blackfin (SS-322) commissioned 4 July, 1944. She conducted five war patrols, but pickings were slim at this point, and she scored only two kills: one merchantman and the veteran destroyer Shigure. After the termination of hostilities, Blackfin helped with mine removal, adding 61 floating mines to her kills, before she returned home. Blackfin participated in Operation Iceberg, a transit of the Arctic Circle, in 1946, and was decommissioned in 1948. Two years later, Blackfin underwent conversion to a Guppy IA-class submarine, receiving modern features including a snorkel and a larger sail, and recommissioned 15 May, 1951. She served with the Pacific Fleet until decommissioned in 1972. She was sunk as a torpedo target 13 May, 1973.
