History

Republic of Korea Submarine Son Won-il (SS-072) is a Type 214 diesel electric submarine, built in South Korea to German design. She carries eight torpedo tubes, four of which can launch the Harpoon anti-shipping missile. Son Won-il is the first of nine planned Type 214s, which the RoK is calling the Son Won-il class, after the founder of their modern navy. Son entered service on 27 December, 2007, and participated in the joint Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises with the US Navy the following year. There were media reports that she suffered from excessive noise generated by her propeller, but the South Korean navy denied the reports were true.
