History

Built at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, HMAS Parramatta (DE 46) was a River-class destroyer escort. Laid down 31 January, 1957, Parramatta commissioned in 1961. When Queen ELizabeth visited aboard HMY Britannia in 1963, Parramatta formed part of her escort. She saw active service during the 1964-66 Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, performing patrol and escort duties for Australian troops deployed to the region. Parramatta also performed troop escort missions during Vietnam. She was deployed to Bali in 1976 to aid in relief efforts after a major earthquake, and modernized from 1977-81. She visited China in 1986, and continued in service until 1991, when she was sold for scrap in Pakistan.
