Giuseppe Garibaldi (C 551) is Italy's second operational aircraft carrier. Laid down in 1981, Garibaldi commissioned 30 September, 1985. Powered by four gas turbines, Garibaldi can make 30 knots or better, and displaces 14,150 tons at full load. Combined with her overall length of 180.2m (591 feet), her air group is limited to eighteen AV-8B Harrier II aircraft, or helicopters. Due to an Italian law restricting fixed-wing aircraft from the navy, she did not received her Harriers until 1989, when the law was lifted. Garibaldi saw action in the 1999 Kosovo War, and again in 2001-02 in the Indian Ocean in support of the ground war in Afghanistan. In 2011, Garibaldi flew support missions off Libya.
