History

Andrea Doria (D 553) is one of the Italian Horizon-class destroyers. Laid down 19 July, 2002, she commissioned 22 December, 2007. Displacing 7,770 tons fully loaded, Doria was originally rated as a frigate, before both France and Italy realized this was lunacy, and re-rated their Horizon-class ships as destroyers, due to size, firepower, and evolving roles. Doria has a combination diesel or gas powerplant, giving her a top speed of 29 knots on the gas turbines, and a cruise range of 7,000 nautical miles on the diesels. This range was put to good use in 2011, when she was deployed off Somalia as part of the EU anti-piracy operations there. Doria fought an inconclusive engagement with a pirate boat on 22 November, with neither combatant scoring any hits.
